Train Your Dog – The Lessons

Is there enough time that you spend on the playground for the qualitative development of skills? If you do not go to the playground and the instructor comes to you and holds private lessons near your house, are these lessons enough? Is it necessary to work with the dog even in those days, when the lessons with an instructor are not provided?

Let us just count up. For example, take a course of obedience, which I propose to conduct individually (with the departure to the house) for my clients. The course includes 20 sessions, held twice a week. To be precise, there is one more lesson, but it is offered as a test one, and it is free and is not included into the course. But for simplicity we express it in round numbers.

The method would involve five classes per hour each. And later, when the dog gets used to the work, the duration of studies is 1.5 hours. The last five studies are conducted in conditions of strong distracting stimuli; much time is spent on replacement of places on city streets, so the duration of each session is 2 hours already. It is easy to calculate that the “paid” time of all classes during the course is 30 hours. With two sessions per week duration of the course is 10 weeks. If the client does not train with the dog when is alone, he has given 30 hours to develop skills during almost three months.

Now imagine that a client works with the dog per 30 minutes in those days, when it has no scheduled classes. It is easy to determine that in this case he works with the dog 55 hours during 10 weeks. Almost twice as many than in the first case! But there are clients who find the time and effort to work with the dog in the right way. And each day they repeat the training, which was held by an instructor last time, without assistance. And do it in the same volume. Again, run the calculator, and get the result: 10 weeks include 105 hours of the dog’s obedience skills developing!

Compare the three numbers: 30, 55 and 105 hours. Even without going into details of the methodology, it is clear that the result in all three cases will be different. Of course, every dog has its own individual characteristics. Some animals need only 30 hours to reach some success. But there are really complicated dogs. They have got a strong nervous system, they are mobile, old enough, and which have rather late begun to work with. Achieving the acceptable controllability from such dogs can be only as a result of hard work.

These simple calculations are confirmed by the practice. Responsible dogs’ owners begin to launch their leash when driving next literally at the second and third session.

He, who has not worked with the dog without an instructor, can throw a leash only on the fifth or seventh session. The dog, which has been involved in a daily basis work, starts to move close without a leash (not with abandoned one, but with unfasten leash) with the correct execution of turns, landing at a stops after 7th – 9th lesson. The dogs of those owners, who have not enough time for classes, start to run without a leash in the 13th – 15th session.

Some dogs need more training than other dogs.

One method used with one dog might not work with the other. A distinct NO or hand gesture is better than any punishment. Consistency in behavior is required to motivate your dog to behave in your desired manner. It is in human and animal nature to try the limit and find the closest escape. Dogs are similar to humans. Dogs respect and follow a leader. Dog training is like going to school. Dogs enjoy fun things and especially when they are rewarded for their particular act. Master and dog want a secure and blissful relationship with their loved ones.

• The easiest trick is known as the shake hands trick where one extends his hand to say, “Shake hands”. Thereafter, catch the paw of the pet in your own hand and shake it. Try to do this a couple of times and the dog would understand this trick.

• The second one is the turnaround trick where the dog is positioned facing you. Then hold something in one hand and ask him to turnaround. Move the treat to the left until the dog begins to follow it. Soon the dog will be in the original position facing you. Now, appreciate the dog and the pet will turn around without any treat being offered to it. Repeat this several times, until the dog learns it.

• The third trick is the crawl trick where the dog is asked to lie down in front of you. Then a treat is offered to it and pulled backwards in slow motion. As the dog moves up to snatch it, move him back with your hand and encourage him to crawl. Once he starts crawling, appreciate it.
